Bruised Heart

Bruises have a way of showing up and showing off on the skin. Those who bruise easily, like me, can show bruises without knowing how they got there. Every once in a while, a bruise shows up and when touched it brings back the memory of how it occurred. One touch of a bruise on the thigh brings back the memory of walking into the corner of the dresser during the middle of the night. As long as the bruise remains blue or purple, you will remember. The deeper the bruise, the longer it lasts. The phrase, “time heals all wounds” applies to bruises. Bruises can occur internally as well as on the skin. Having an accident can bruise internal organs, which may take longer to heal.

I believe there are psychological bruises on the heart that take more than time to heal. These bruises are remembered when situations in our lives come up and cause us to react in anger, bitterness, hatred, and/or jealousy, envy. These negative emotions touch the bruised heart within and brings back painful, negative memories. The cure for a bruised heart is to remember the awful negative pain, talk about it, confess holding onto it and storing up the pain. “But because of your stubbornness and your unrepentant heart, you are storing up wrath against yourself for the day of God’s wrath, when His righteous judgment will be revealed” (Romans 2:5). In order to heal a broken bruised heart, we must become humble and willing to share the pain we have stored up. We all will have several thousand moments in life which cause heart bruises. Being ignored by a co-worker or even a family member touches a heart bruise which brings back memories of being ignored and/or neglected as a child. You may react irrationally by yelling while demanding their attention. Someone may ask you a question that you don’t know the answer to. Instead of responding, “I don’t know about that”, you remember being ridiculed and feeling shamed. This heart bruise is deep and causes reactions that make a crowd ponder your sanity. There could be even a song, a smell, a word, a thought that takes you back to an unhealthy place emotionally and mentally. These deep seeded bruises greatly affect our lives whether we realize it or not.

We need to recognize our reactions and think about the cause. There is a root to every emotion, good and bad just like flowers and weeds. Ask those who love you about your actions and reactions to things. Ask God to reveal anything that may be causing heart bruises. The Holy Spirit wants to occupy our hearts. We wouldn’t move into a house if the landlord kept throwing trash in it. God is able to clean up our hearts without our help. The problem is when we keep trashing it. Save some time and heal the heart bruises by revealing them to God.
