Wow, that’s sounds a bit harsh! We like a world where everyone has freedoms and rights. The mass murderer has the right to a trial and a paid attorney even though everyone in the world including the murderer claim guilty. What are we afraid of? Is the risk of hurting his feelings a major priority? I’m amazed how we have transformed into a “right and wrong” world to “it will be ok if you didn’t really mean it” world. The Bible is clear on what is right and wrong. So Christians are without excuse. Just because we live in the world doesn’t make us like the world. We are to take a stand for the truth at all cost. That is the example Jesus set before us. He also provides many examples in the Bible.
Small shepherd boy, David, chose to face the giant Goliath. Goliath was “breaking the law” in conquering the Israelites. Yes, Goliath was over nine feet tall and extremely battle ready. No doubt the Israelites of normal size were terrified. David a young teenager stood strongly for “right and wrong” and decided to take him on by himself. His confidence came from the Holy Spirit of God whom had been training him in his daily duties of shepherding sheep (1 Samuel 17:34-37). Everyone tried to talk him out of it, because he’s crazy! David refused and prepared himself with his skills. He became skilled at sling shot targeting. So David gathers three rocks and faces the giant. One, two, three swings and he throws straight to the fat forehead of Goliath. Goliath falls dead! That alone would cause a celebration, but David wasn’t satisfied with just killing him. He went over to the monster and cut his head off. David was sending a message to the other Philistines that we belong to the God of the Universe and therefore will not entertain the ways of the Philistines. His plan worked, like all of God’s plans do.
Nature shows us that cutting off heads are necessary. Rose bushes and flowering plants must be “dead-headed” in order to produce another flower and grow properly. Pruning is a natural process in nature and in our lives. There are things we have to be rid of in order to grow properly. Sometimes when we want to hang on and resist the pruning process, God has to get our attention by cutting the head off. Maybe we have dangerous thoughts about a co-worker “friend” that takes our emotions into adultery. This happens everyday and we call it “friendly flirting”, “he’s easy to talk to”, “we are working on a project”, “he needs someone to confide in”. Pruning is not enough to change your heart in this very WRONG atmosphere. We need to recognize the damage and CUT the head OFF! Completely end contact in every way, shape or form. Cleanse your mind with the Word of God and surround yourself with godly people who will encourage you.
But what if it just feels like we were meant to be together? Isn’t that the feeling we are supposed to have with our spouse? I married too young and we were not thinking about all our differences. You know what? TOO STINKING BAD! (harsh) You made a covenant with a Holy God and that one person whom you claimed to spend the rest of your life with. The feelings you have for another is the enemy trying to break your godly covenant so he can have full control of your emotional life and thus physical life. I know, I’ve been there. It hurts bad and for what seems like forever but God has a wonderful way of restoring you completely and healing your marriage to the point of wonderful. We cannot control our spouse and their thoughts, but we can love them by loving God and allowing God to love through us.
