Are you old enough to remember the commercial that went, “A mind is a terrible thing to waste”? That’s true. We only have one brain (mind) and when we reach adulthood, it stops or slows down acquiring and starts to have trouble retrieving. There are so many people who suffer dementia, Alzheimer’s, and bouts of other problems of the mind. It’s very important to train our minds while we are young and exercise it regularly to maintain its shape. I would call it not obesity brain but anorexic brain. We have to protect our minds from harmful things. What is harmful? The worldly perspective. Paul tells us in Romans 16:17-18 “I urge you, brothers and sisters, to watch out for those who cause divisions and put obstacles in your way to the teaching you have learned. Keep away from them. For such people are not serving the Lord Christ, but their own appetites. By smooth talk and flattery they deceive the minds of naïve people”. Keep your mind healthy and open. Read the Bible which is full of wisdom and direction. Hold onto promises made by God alone. Do not accept someone’s word for it. Search it out on your own and make up your mind.
Being at a high school, I see many students trying to “be” like someone else. Their minds are not focused and exercised enough to know who they are themselves, so they graft onto someone who seems to know. This is dangerous. Everyone is different and will develop themselves differently. Learn who you are first, then you can develop healthy relationships with others without becoming one of them. A promise from Philippians 4:7 “and the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus”.
