Being a loser is not popular. Folks are labeled “Loser” for many reason other than actually losing a game. There is one place where being a looser is a wonderful, positive thing. Mark 8:34-36, Jesus tells the disciples to deny themselves, take up his cross and follow him. This kind of crazy talk confused them and still confuses us today. Jesus confused us further by saying “whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for me and for the gospel will save it”.
Jesus wants us to be losers of ourselves. He means we surrender our lives to God and allow Him to master our steps. I can see God’s struggle as I raise teenage boys who often rebel, deny, and fuss over being told to “do something”. God may tell us to do something that goes beyond our comfort zone, or even out of our way. We will fuss and try to compromise or flat out refuse. But when we have a close relationship with God, we are happy and grateful to do whatever He says, like an obedient child may be. Just like parenting, there are consequences with our disobedience.
Go against the flow, paint across the grain, don’t worry what others think of you being a loser for Christ.
