We Must Choose!

We all have choices to make in life. Everyday we are bombarded with a thousand or so choices. It can get very frustrating. Children don’t realize how good they have it in this life by parents making choices for them. Parents hope that their good choices will rub off eventually so that when they are teenagers they will automatically know the good choices to make. Having two teenage boys, I can’t really depend on them pulling from example. They tend to make dumb choices “in the moment”. Having a bonfire one evening, they needed some wood to burn. Looking around our neighborhood, they decide to break a limb off a tree. That’s logical right? Until they find out it was the neighbor’s prize tree. So needless to say, we have no more bonfires without parental supervision and planning. We often make bad choices “in the moment” because our current culture wants everything NOW. We don’t want to wait or plan ahead for something to happen, we just do what we want, when we want it.

If a single lady couldn’t decide between two wonderful guys which to marry, do you think they would wait years for her to decide? NO! She must make a choice. God expects the same from us. He knows we are battling between loving Him and loving this world and all its sweet offers. Yet, we must choose. He tells His people in Joshua 24:15 “If serving the Lord seems undesirable to you, then choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your forefathers (world) served beyond the River, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you are living. But as for me and my household, we will serve the Lord”. Are we not like these people? We choose to “be” like those we work with at work, then we “become” like our friends when we are with them. Who are we? God wants us to be His Children, representatives of Jesus Christ, example to others, teachers of the Truth. We cannot be that while we are someone else. We must Choose!!

  1. Whereas I agree with you about choosing how we will relate to God, I am confused about the image of heaven and hell – Why would a God who loves His children doom them to eternal misery? Any father would see the flaw in the logic of this? Would you agree?

    • God doesn’t doom anyone. He wants everyone to choose Him. God’s love is not mandatory. He provides everyone the same opportunity to accept what He did for us: sending Jesus to earth to die as a sacrifice for all sins. Before this, people had to sacrifice pure animals for their sins. Jesus came to be the final sacrifice. We accept this truth and God’s love to live in Heaven or we choose not to believe it and live our own life. Think of it like a Father: we accept that we are a child of the Father and follow his rules and let him guide our decisions or we tell the father we don’t want to live under his roof anymore and we want to be on our own. Everyone has this choice.
